Gunnolf

Gunnolf had killed 31 people, a few of those in the last few days, but he’d never really planned it out before. He was a sell-sword, a mercenary bodyguard; he’d follow someone around and kill whoever tried to kill them. This time he was acting like a true assassin, if an under-skilled one, but he actually hated the man he was after, truly hated him. It wasn’t just the girl, though that would be more than enough. It was the whole view of life he represented.

It was like a form of slavery; they were so far above everyone else. Common people had to dig the earth, slave and earn; you could die of a rotten tooth, while these pricks could heal anything. Yet not one of them said that to make money you could set up as a healer and charge a gold per life. That would work, but no. They used their powers to rig dice and seduce unwilling women. Wizards were all pervert freaks who would be nothing without their powers.

Gunnolf was getting very good with his crossbow; he’d spent a few days training with it and now sat in his room with his new comrade in crime, a 19-year-old runaway mage. Her demeanor had changed quite a bit and she seemed a lot more serious now. He’d asked her to help, and for him it was simple; use magic to break magic. Yet now he saw it was like he was asking her to fight Yollond as well.

She sat in clothes he’d bought for her, and she looked like a scruffy beggar girl. Still it helped her to remain unseen. She sat with books on her knees and read. They’d been at it for three days. She made leashes and broken them, trying to find the fastest way. She’d read and re-read the book a hundred times.

“I’m going to Skinner’s – be back,” he said.

She didn’t even look up from the book, but he heard her mutter, “Yeah.”

Gunnolf rode Nelly through the city to Skinner’s house. It was strange for him. The scar-faced Carthian was still wanted, but no one looked twice at him. There were only around 10 hundred of his brethren in the city but no one knew it was him; he had also left his mace at home. He was greeted at the door by Jenny.

She was the most amazed by his lack of scar and was so happy for him. “Hello handsome, come in,” she said, as she opened the door.

“Thanks Jenny,” he said with a grin. He wasn’t really handsome, but then Skinner was rough too. Jenny was an angel and he had no idea why she hung around them.

Skinner was there, planning. Gunnolf had paid him to help, but they were still friends. He was rich right now and the thought of just running away was constant, but he knew well you couldn’t ever escape yourself, no matter how far you ran. Also, if he survived, he had actual plans. He’d go back to Carthage with enough money to buy a house if he wanted.
